Child Therapy & Counseling
Our Child Therapists provide a safe environment in which children can explore their emotions through talk, expressive arts & music therapy. Children, especially younger children, are often not able to express the emotions they are feeling, so this multitude of processes helps them to transcend their feelings. The typical areas of exploration include responsibilities, relationships, work, physical or mental health concerns and body image issues. Take the first step towards helping your child. What is Child Therapy?
Simply put, child therapy is child-centered. Often, the therapeutic modalities that work well with adults need to be adapted for children who are not as adept at communicating and expressing themselves.
Counseling helps children understand and manage challenges that affect their mental health. Some of these challenges can include Behavioral Issues, Anxiety, ADHD, Grief, Trauma.
Child counselors and child psychologists are well-equipped to work with kids and teens, as they possess the proper training & experience to understand how young minds work and how to best help.
Should my child see a therapist?
Your child may benefit from seeing a therapist if:
- They need emotional support and someone to help express their feelings.
- They’re struggling with anxiety, depression, anger or big life changes.
- You notice your child acting out
- New or existing behavioral issues that don’t seem to be resolving
- You’d like help figuring out how to get along better with your child and improve difficult behavior.
- You’d like your child to meet with someone regularly, and you’re not looking for help with medication or more complex mental health conditions.
What types of therapy are available to my children?
Adults can have a hard time sorting through their emotions and expressing their feelings. How much more for children! Modalities for children have to take this into consideration and provide alternatives to talk therapy. These can include:
- Art therapy
- Music Therapy
- Behavioral therapy
- Child-centered play therapy
- Child-parent relationship therapy
- Child anger management therapy
- Child trauma therapy
- Child-parent interaction therapy
Art and Expressive Arts Therapy
Expressive arts therapy is an approach that utilizes a variety of methods including writing, music, visual arts, drama, and dance to help children achieve personal growth. In this type of treatment, children work with a trained therapist who helps them explore and understand their reactions to their experience with different forms of expressive art. Expressive arts therapy is a process of self-discovery using artistic self expression to achieve emotional release.
Music Therapy
Music therapy is the clinical use of music to accomplish individualized goals such as reducing stress, improving mood and self-expression. It is an evidence-based therapy well-established in the health community. Music therapy experiences may include listening, singing, playing instruments, or composing music. Musical skills or talents are not required to participate.
Behavioral Therapy
Behavior therapy teaches children and their families how to strengthen positive child behaviors and eliminate or reduce unwanted or problem behaviors. One type is parent training in behavior management. The therapist works with parents to learn or improve skills to manage their child’s behavior.
