Play Therapy FAQs
What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is a form of therapy that uses the imaginative pretend play of a child and the observations, direction and guidance of a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Children can explore their emotions in a comfortable and familiar environment thanks to play therapy. The inability of children to consistently and precisely articulate their thoughts, feelings and emotions makes play therapy a great medium for exploring unresolved issues. Sessions typically explore themes of power and aggression, nurturing, mastery, exploratory, problem-solving and emotional expression.
What Does Play Therapy Treat?
- developmental delay or learning disabilities
- school behavioral issues
- aggressive and angry behavior
- divorce or separation
- death of a close family member
- Traumatic events

What Age is Play Therapy for?
Children aged 3-12 typically benefit the most from play therapy and can be helpful in a variety of circumstances when a child is experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties.

- Taking responsibility for behavior
- Developing coping strategies & relief from anxiety

Why Choose Mosaic Way for Play Therapy in Southlake
Southlake is home to high-achieving families with high expectations. Carroll ISD consistently ranks among the top school districts in Texas, and many children in this community face real pressure to perform academically and socially from an early age. That pressure, combined with the fast pace of family life, can leave children struggling to find words for what they are feeling inside.
Mosaic Way Counseling understands the unique world children grow up in here. Whether your child attends school near the Timarron, Estes Park, or Carillon neighborhoods, or comes from a family navigating a major life transition, our therapists are trained to meet children where they are. We use play as a language because children are wired to communicate that way.
Our Southlake office serves families in Southlake, Keller, Grapevine, Colleyville, Westlake, Northlake, and Trophy Club. We believe every child deserves a space where they feel safe, heard, and supported. Our therapists collaborate closely with parents throughout the process, because the most meaningful progress happens when home and therapy are working in the same direction.
If you are looking for play therapy services for your child in the Southlake area, our team is here to help. Start with a free consultation and we will guide you from there.
Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT)
Child-Centered Play Therapy, often called CCPT, is a research-backed approach that puts the child in the driver’s seat. Sessions are led by the child. Our therapists create a warm, accepting space where kids can play freely and without judgment.
The idea behind CCPT is simple. Children naturally communicate through play. When a child feels safe and in control of their play, they begin to work through their feelings on their own terms. Our therapists observe, reflect, and gently guide the process without directing or correcting the child’s choices.
CCPT is especially effective for children dealing with anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, or emotional dysregulation. It helps children build confidence, develop healthy coping skills, and feel more secure in themselves and in their relationships.
What to Expect in a CCPT Session
Your child will have access to a thoughtfully equipped play therapy room. Sessions typically run 45 to 50 minutes. Parents are often invited to check in with the therapist at key points in the process so the whole family stays connected to the work being done.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, or PCIT, is an evidence-based treatment designed to strengthen the relationship between a parent and child while addressing challenging behaviors. It is one of the most well-studied approaches in child mental health, with decades of research behind it.
PCIT works in two phases. In the first phase, parents learn skills to follow their child’s lead during play, building warmth and connection. In the second phase, parents learn how to set calm, consistent limits that reduce defiance and improve behavior at home and school.
One of the things that makes PCIT different is live coaching. During sessions, our therapists coach parents in real time as they interact with their child. This hands-on support helps parents feel confident using new skills right away, not just after reading a handout.
Who Is PCIT For?
PCIT is most effective for children ages 2 to 7 who are showing significant behavioral challenges such as aggression, defiance, tantrums, or difficulty following directions. It is also a strong fit for families navigating trauma, attachment disruptions, or major life changes.
If you are not sure whether PCIT is the right fit for your child, our team is happy to talk it through with you during a free consultation.
