When your kid is struggling, your first instinct is to talk to them. But for younger children, talking isn’t the easiest way to share feelings. That’s where play therapy comes in.
It uses toys, art, sand, and imagination as tools. Kids express what they can’t put into words. It’s not just playing. It’s guided work with a trained therapist.
How It Works
Your child meets with a therapist in a room built for play. The room has toys, art supplies, puppets, and a sandbox.
The therapist watches, joins in, and gently guides the session. Over time, patterns show up. Those patterns help the therapist understand what your child needs. Sessions are 50 minutes, once a week.
What It Helps With
Anxiety and worry. Acting out at home or school. ADHD. Low mood. Trauma. Grief. Divorce. Low self-esteem. Anger. Big life changes like a move or new sibling.
What Age Is It For?
Play therapy is most common for ages 3 to 12. For younger kids (ages 2 to 7), we may also use PCIT, which stands for Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. Your child’s therapist picks the right fit.
What Parents Should Know
You’re part of the process. Your child’s therapist keeps you updated. They’ll share themes that come up and give you ways to help at home.
It’s normal to wonder if “just playing” can help. Research says yes. Play therapy is a proven treatment for a wide range of childhood issues.
