EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s one of the most studied treatments for trauma, anxiety, and related conditions. But how do you know if it’s right for you?
Here are some signs it could help.
Talk Therapy Hasn’t Been Enough
Talk therapy helps many people. But for some, talking about the problem doesn’t change how their body reacts to it.
EMDR works differently. It targets how painful memories are stored in the brain. It helps reprocess them so they stop triggering the same intense reactions.
Certain Things Set You Off
A place, a sound, a smell. Suddenly you’re anxious, panicked, or flooded with emotion. That’s often a past experience driving the reaction.
EMDR helps reduce the power of those triggers by processing the root memory.
Flashbacks or Intrusive Thoughts
Unwanted memories that pop up without warning. Vivid flashbacks. Bad dreams on repeat. EMDR is built to address these. It helps your brain move stuck memories from a reactive state to a resolved one.
Anxiety That Doesn’t Make Sense
Not all anxiety ties back to trauma. But when worry feels constant and out of proportion to your life right now, it can sometimes trace back to earlier events. EMDR helps uncover and process those links.
Negative Self-Beliefs
Trauma often plants beliefs like “I’m not good enough” or “It was my fault.” Those beliefs shape your choices and relationships for years. EMDR works to replace them with more accurate ones.
What to Expect
EMDR has eight phases. It starts with intake and prep. Then you move into active processing. Your therapist guides you through sets of eye movements while you focus on a target memory.
Sessions are 50 minutes, once a week. Most people find them intense but manageable. Relief often comes between sessions as the brain does its work.
