From the outside, you look like you have it together. You hit your deadlines. You show up for everyone. But inside, your mind won’t slow down, and rest feels impossible.

That’s high-functioning anxiety. It’s common, it’s draining, and it often goes unnoticed because you keep performing.

What It Looks Like

You overprepare for everything. You replay conversations long after they end. You say yes when you mean no. You stay busy partly to outrun the worry.

Your body keeps score too. A tight chest. Trouble sleeping. A stomach in knots. A short fuse you can’t explain.

Because you still function, people assume you’re fine. You might even tell yourself the same thing.

Stress or Anxiety?

Stress usually fades when the pressure lifts. You finish the project, and you exhale.

Anxiety tends to stick around. The worry finds a new target. Even good news can come with a wave of “what if.” If the unease rarely lets up, that’s worth paying attention to.

Why It's Easy to Miss

Our culture rewards the very traits anxiety can drive. Productivity. Always being on. Never dropping the ball. So the line between healthy ambition and anxiety gets blurry.

But running on worry has a cost. Over time it wears down your sleep, your focus, and your relationships.

What Actually Helps

You can’t just think your way out of it. Therapy gives you real tools.

CBT helps you catch the anxious thought patterns and build steadier ones. EMDR can ease anxiety that traces back to past events your body still reacts to. Many people feel calmer within a few weeks.

Small steps help too. Protecting your sleep. Moving your body. Saying no to one thing this week. None of these replace therapy, but they make a dent.

The goal isn’t to lose your drive. It’s to keep what serves you and drop the constant alarm.
